My awaited copy of Whistle arrived!

There are boekies and there are books. Whistle is a book and it cost DVS a lot of money to send me my copy.  I am delighted he did.  This collaboration between De Villo Sloan and Kristine Snodgrass is the story of how two parts become a whole.  They call it a 'journey' and as you travel through the book, you bear witness to the evolution of a collaborative voice - made of two distinct styles and a push and pull between the sexes.

I love the intro by DVS. Sometimes I need hand-holding in asemics and his intro gave me just enough. I could look for things but I could also co-construct meaning just by looking. Krissy's notes are also brilliant. I learned so much about these artists. For me, understanding them made me interact with their work all the more. You can learn more about `krissy here: Krissy's website   and see DVS' brilliant blog here: Asemic Front

You need to get your own copy of Whistle and you can do that here: Buy Whistle

It is beautiful, difficult, sexy and complex.

Asemic Front starters

Horrified to see that DVS made these and mailed them out to me straightaway and I am only now acknowledging them! I showed them to people at my Open Studio and these starters caused quite a stir!

Some of you may not know that I got a surprise honour/award in mid June and since then my time has been carved up a little more and it seems as if time is at a perpertual tipping point.  It's all great, but I simply can't fit everything in a day or a week or a month so I'm getting more and more behind. I refuse to feel stressed about mail art and I am supremely reliable, so I trust it will all work itself out but it is Saturday night at 9:19 amd I'm tw months behind and I need to go and start the plum chutney because I already pitted the plums… etc.

This mailing from DVS is exciting and daunting, a bit like the New English Art Club Drawing Scholarship. I am out of my comfort zone but will have a go and hopefully once I'm in the corner something will happen. The starters are inspiring.  I've placed them around my studio and will let my brain do some of the backgorund intuitive thinking for a while and then…
Thanks DVS. They won't be in your mailbox for a little while, yet.

Asemic Vispo for Rebecca 9.27.2014 (DeVillo Sloan)

Leave it to De Villo Sloan to send me something that makes ME speechless!

I learned a long time ago that feeling daunted by something you can't quite pin down is a useless emotion.  You need to re-read it, live with it for a while and it will speak to YOU and your reading of it will be your reading of it and really that's all that counts.  If it moves you it's a success.

So what I like is the rhythm.  It's like a slide on an acoustic guitar.  I see lots of things in it but I'm not conviced that's the point. The colours feel egyptian.  It's full of ellipsis and a determination to be heard. It's a treasure! I'll be re-reading it again and again.

So that was the serious bit.  And this is the Mink Ranch bit. I will never tire of the Mink Ranch. Today when I was walking Lyra I was almost figuring out a reply.

Although correspondence with the Mink Ranch is sporadic, it is hugely appreciated and worth the wait.  DVS reminds me that once upon a time I was a faithful member of the ML community… it's all just time, and I miss the bunkhouse flicks, but I'll be back and you should too!

Did you notice the DKULT stamp etc?
