As I look at the original of this piece, it's dusky outdoors and I listen to birds. We aren't that near the coast here but with arable land all around we have plenty of birds and the studio is sandwiched between four sets of chickens. Beautiful mailing, Kevin, and I love the banana.

The Envelope is the art!

Naughtily I am blogging two of James' pieces together. I got back from Maine and although I got few pieces of mail while away, I hadn't blogged what `i'd received before yet.  The first is a sensational  almost anamorphic  ink drawing.  I love the variety of handwriting, the restrained colour, the stamps and the sentiment.  James has brought together everything you need in a piece of mailart. 

The second ppostcard is more 'au courant', topical and chosen specifically for ME, one of James' New Yorker friends.

No Nixies in England

I think this irregular mailing is made from a bit of a book.  It's TRASHPO! Another person who used to send me pieces of books is the Artist in Seine.  His stuff was absolutely audacious.  I once sent Vizma a life sized postcard of the top half of a topless woman.  I think Artist in Seine has taken a mail art holiday.  I know I owe him some mailart, maybe he's given up on me!

I owe James and Kevin mailart, too. I have a box with all the mailart I have blogged; I haven't even managed to write it all down in the Ledger.  I always have such good intentions… It's always a pain to do it later too.

If you follow this blog you will know that I challenged James to send me some irregular mailart when (and if) I go to Maine this year. You'll be happy to know that James' experiment (sending something that might become a nixie in America - due to it's size and shape arrived. -  (Nixie (postal) ... A Nixie is a name given by the United States Postal Service to a piece of mail which is undeliverable as addressed. It is derived from "nix").  I guess it couldn't go through a machine, though, as the stamp is hand cancelled, again.

Received: haptic digital collage stamps

Kevin and James sent me this beautiful sheet of stamps, which pre-perforation make an exquisitel collage of imagery and textures.  As I archive my mail art, I wonder about photocopying this, perforating the photocopied page in order to use the faux-faux stamps to send out on other mail art. I am curious about what each stamp would look like and how I could use them on my own mail art. If I do, I will photograph the pieces.  Thank you!

Listen to 'A Migrant's Tale'

Thank you, Kevin, for such an important mailing! A few years ago, when I volunteered with Suffolk Refugee Support, suffolkrefugee, I helped hang an exhibition of photos of migrants arriving by boat into the UK. The photos were harrowing. I think it was a debate about UK's migrant policy that made our son the caring adult he became. I applaud you for shining a light on ths and for reminding us all to consider it and to listen.

 

A 200 Count Mailing

 

Delighted to receive mail art from Kevin and James Gillen! Love the graphic feel, the nod to doodles and get an INTERNATIONAL vibe as an American living in the UK. I'm also happy to see the trashpo aspect. It is definately a 200 count mailing!

James has been very active trying to match me to other mailartists and mail art opportunities and I am very grateful. In the spirit of correspondence, I will relish creating a response. James and his dad, Kevin, run a wonderful facebook group Mailart Worldwide consider sending to them!
