American Values: Kabul Moment

IMHO It's important to see images taken of America outside of America to understand the context of what has happened, how we are viewed and what values we reflect to the wider world. Patrick read me something he read on Facebook this morning. Before I attend to a post, I always want to know the context, to go beyond the headline.  Once I had done that I was able to place what seemed offensive into a context I could evaluate. I'm reading a book by Ben Rhodes about what it is to be American out of America.  As I learned when I stepped off the plane into Kenya as a Peace Corps Volunteer, it is nuanced and complicated. Thank you Cascadia for more thinking and for the unpleasant reminder of how we sometimes get things wrong. What a mess.

 While the rest of us were rushing around buying holiday gifts, baubles and chocolate, Cascadia Artpost  had his opening of Dada Triumph Motors a 'near future representation of a small city in Cascadia at 1:87', inpired by Wof Vostell. As I look at that mug shop of Trump on the wall, I wonder whether the poster on the table in the situation room (described yesterday) was purloined from the walls of DTM. 

Also delighted to have additional promo material. I wish I lived near Cascadia so I could see the The Fender Roads Totem in the flesh, or the plastic or whatever Cascadia uses as a building material.

 And finally, one more car-based communication arrived  (in November) from Cascadia. In typical Cascadia jocular tradition, he merges the joy of driving with some more austere messages. Zoom in and see what you think!

Commodity Civilization IV - Cascadia Artpost

I love Cascadia Artpost's artistamps! They require careful inspection and make a biting commentary on American civilization. I hope what Cascadia sees is only part of the picture and must admit that the English and other culutres probably share some of the evils he highlights. Whatever, although I like them, they make me sad.

And Cascadia may be cheering tonight on hearing the news that I heard this morning… apparently the biggest shipping company with 7% of the market has gone bust and that means 7% of the goods heading around the world for consumption will have a harder time getting there!
